If the Windows Media online database recognizes your disc but doesn t have all the track names the way you want to see them in your Media Library, click Find Album Info in the Rip window. The downloaded information appears in a pane at the bottom of the window. (You can enlarge this pane by dragging the horizontal split bar that separates it from the original track listing.) To change any part of this information, click the Edit button (just below the album cover). An editing window, similar to the one shown in Figure 20-5 on the next page, will then appear. Use the boxes at the top of the editing pane to edit the artist name, album name, or genre. Use the boxes below to edit the titles of individual tracks. The names of performers and composers for individual tracks are hidden by default; to show these details and make them available for editing, click the respective column headings. When you ve completed your edits, click Next. The resulting pane displays the results of your editing and gives you a chance to review it for errors. As the text at the top of the pane notes, your edits are sent to WindowsMedia.com, where they may be used to update the database from which the information came. From a personal standpoint, however, the important thing is that editing the album information keeps your own Media Library in good order. Doing so before you begin the copy process ensures that the file names you see later, when you work with your Media Library in Windows Explorer, are correct. 749

Problem: The security database is corrupted. A hardware problem if the computer is improperly shut down or a software error. Run esentutl /g to check the integrity of the security database at %Systemroot%\Security\Database\Secedit.sdb If the database is corrupt, attempt to recover it by running esentutl /r on the %Systemroot%\Security folder. If this fails, attempt to repair it by running esentutl /p on %Systemroot%\Security\Database\Secedit.sdb. Then delete the log files in %Systemroot%Security. Use RSoP to check what GPO is affecting the computer. Check the log file, located in %Systemroot%\Security\Logs\ Winlogon.log, to identify specific errors that occur during policy propagation to the computer.

Note According to the experts we consulted, the information you submit when you update a Windows Media listing may indeed be used to correct errors or omissions in the online database, although the process can take six weeks or more. In addition, when you submit artist/album/track information for a CD that isn t currently listed in the online database, your input is likely to end up in the database after a similar processing period. If you re an artist or CD producer in the United States, you can submit product information directly to artist_submissions@allmusic.com; consumers can send corrections via the form at http://www.allmusic.com/feedback3.html. Tip Pay attention to genre and artist names The Windows Media online database occasionally abbreviates musical genres in ways that are unnecessary for Windows Media Player. If you re bothered by this if you d rather see Country than CTRY, for example, edit the genre before you copy. It s good to be consistent about genre names, since genres become playlists. You get one playlist for all your Rock tracks, another for all your Jazz tracks, and so on. Artists too become playlists. On albums where different artists perform on different tracks, AMG generally doesn t provide the trackby-track details. If getting the playlists right is important to you, edit before you copy.

If you accept the generic names, your music will sound fine, but you ll have a hard time finding your way back to it, either in Windows Media Player or in Windows Explorer In Windows Explorer, your file and folder names will be a jumble of Unknowns In previous versions of Windows Media Player, cleaning up this mess was a cumbersome process In Windows Media Player 10, updating your library and renaming files is considerably simpler (see Editing Album and Track Info After You Rip, page 753, for details) Of course, if possible, pay attention to the process before you rip the tracks from your CD If Windows Media Player can t supply the usual information, you can add it manually before you copy, or you can go ahead and worry about track names and metadata later.
