We don t know about you, but a question we had after seeing this pattern over and over is Is there a way to perform the iteration within the query instead of in a separate foreach loop The short answer is that there is no query operator that comes with LINQ that can help you to do that. Our answer is that you can easily create one by yourself. You can create the ForEach operator, which addresses this issue, with the code in listing 5.24.

Under some circumstances, the Make My Pictures Smaller option doesn t appear when you try to send files via e-mail from Windows Explorer. The culprit is a DLL that is no longer registered with the Windows shell. The fix is simple. Click Start, Run. In the Open box, type regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and press Enter.

The results of such file compression can be startling. Table 21-1 shows the before and after file sizes of four images. In all cases, the compressed file is less than half the size of the original, and in the case of large TIFF and BMP files, the compression ratio is as much as 99 percent.

Problem: Objects, counters, or instances seem to be missing or invalid. Test routines that run when you start the Performance console have detected a problem with installed counters and have disabled the counters automatically to prevent the counters from slowing the system. Disabled objects and counters do not appear in the Add Counters dialog box. Enable the disabled counters by using the Registry Editor. Change the value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCon trolSet\Services\Service_name\Performance\ Disable Performance Counters from 1 for disable to 0 for enable. Note that counters that have been disabled after initial testing are likely to contain errors and might cause system problems. Turn off the counter DLL automatic testing feature or adjust the level of testing. Using the Registry Editor, locate the Configuration Flags subkey under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib and change the value of the REG_DWORD entry. Use Task Manager to verify that the process is running. If so, use Exctrlst.exe on the Resource Kit companion CD-ROM to verify that the counter DLL is enabled. Make sure that the service or feature that provides the counter has been installed or configured. Check Event Viewer to see whether the counter DLL or the Performance Data Helper reported any errors. If necessary, you can disable counter DLLs that are causing errors by using Exctrlst.exe on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, available on the Microsoft Web site at http:// www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/ reskit/resourcekit.mspx. Monitor the application via the NTVDM process.

You are trying to monitor a 16-bit or MS-DOS application. Only 32-bit processes appear in the instances list. Active 16-bit processes appear as threads running in a Windows NT Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) process.

Using the technique described in this section to shrink and compress an image file invariably causes a loss of data. When you re sending a snapshot to your parents, the decrease in quality is probably a fair tradeoff for the faster, slimmer e-mail attachment. But if the scanned image contains text, or if the recipient wants to be able to print a high-quality copy, check the compressed image before you click Send. Where quality is crucial, you might have better results using the ZIP format to compress the original file without losing any data. Or look for a third-party image editing program such as IrfanView (http:// www.irfanview.com) or Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasc.com), which gives you greater control over compression.
