The Performance Logs And Alerts snap-in provides you with the ability to create counter logs, trace logs, and system alerts automatically from local or remote computers. Counter logs record sampled data about hardware resources and system services based on performance objects and counters in the same manner as System Moni tor. You can view logged counter data using System Monitor or export the data to a file for analysis and report generation. Trace logs collect event traces that measure performance statistics associated with events such as disk and file I/O, page faults, and thread activity. An alert detects when a predefined counter value rises above or falls below the configured threshold and notifies a user by means of the Messenger service. Alerts enable you to define a counter value that triggers actions such as sending a network message, running a program, making an entry in the application log, or start ing a log.

This goes through the list, finding every book whose number of pages is equal to the maximum, and then takes the first of those books. Unfortunately, the comparison calculates the maximum size on every iteration. This makes it an O(n2) operation. A fourth option is to use two separate queries, like in listing 5.34.

In Lessons 1 and 2, you learned how to monitor Active Directory performance by using the directory service log in the Event Viewer console and System Monitor and Perfor mance Logs And Alerts in the Performance console. These tools enable you to obtain up-to-date information about how Active Directory is operating. However, simply mon itoring Active Directory performance does not enable you to optimize and troubleshoot performance. To effectively optimize and troubleshoot Active Directory performance, you must be able to analyze and interpret the information obtained from monitoring.

By default, Active Directory uses FRS to replicate changes over the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Endpoint Mapper service that utilizes TCP port 135. If there is a firewall between two domain controllers of the same domain, you will have to configure the firewall to allow replication. You do so by opening the correct ports on the firewall in order to support Active Directory replication. If you leave Active Directory domain controllers set to use the default RPC configuration, you must open TCP port 135 on the firewall in order for those domain controllers to replicate Active Directory data across the firewall. Further, the RPC client on each computer is configured to use TCP ports between 1024 and 65535. You ll have to enable dynamic ports between those ranges. If this is unacceptable, you can change the default ports that RPC uses on any given computer through the registry. The registry locations for FRS and RPC configu ration are under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive. The specific path to FRS configuration is \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTFRS\Parameters. The spe cific path to RPC configuration is \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RPC.
