To increase the logging level for the directory service log in the registry, complete the following steps: 1. Log on as Administrator. 2. Click Start and then click Run. 3. In the Run dialog box, in the Open box, type regedit and then click OK. 4. In the Registry Editor console, open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics key. 5. In the details pane, double-click the DWORD value for which you would like to increase the logging level. 6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 1 or 2 in the Value Data box. Ensure that the Hexadecimal button is selected. Click OK. 7. Log off and then log on again. 8. Open Event Viewer and view the enhanced directory service log.

As you learned in Lesson 1, the Performance console provides a graphical way to view Active Directory performance by using System Monitor. The Performance console also provides a means to log activity, view logs, or send alerts by using Performance Logs And Alerts. To troubleshoot problems indicated by System Monitor, you must be able to analyze and interpret the results of each counter you have selected for monitoring.

The resulting length, however, would make your clip names hard to read when you position them on the timeline or storyboard. The best method we ve found for keeping the date information is to add it as a comment in the Properties dialog box of the source file (see Figure 22-5). Tagging the source file with comments regarding the content and purpose of your captured footage, as well as its date of origin, will help you keep track of the goods.

There are four steps in the process of analyzing and interpreting performancemonitoring results: 1. Establish a baseline. 2. Analyze performance-monitoring results. 3. Plan and implement changes to meet the baseline. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until performance is optimized.

Multiple object-relational mapping tools are available for .NET. There is a choice of open source, free, or commercial products. Establishing a Baseline A baseline is a measurement derived from the collection of data over an extended period during varying workloads and user connections, repre senting acceptable performance under typical operating conditions The baseline indi cates how system resources are used during periods of normal activity and makes it easier to spot problems when they occur You can establish a baseline for system per formance by performing routine monitoring over periods ranging from days to weeks to months During this period of routine monitoring, find out the types of work being done by the system and the days and times when the work is being done Knowing about the work being done by the system can help you to associate types of work with resource usage and to determine the reasonable parameters of performance during those intervals.
