If you download media from the Internet, you have a choice as to whether to add such items to your Media Library automatically. If you want every item you play to take up residence in the Library, choose Tools, Options, and click the Player tab. Then select Add Music Files To Library When Played. Otherwise, leave this check box clear.

If you don t add media items automatically the first time you play them, you can drag a media file from Windows Explorer (or your desktop) and drop it onto Media Player s Details pane to bring the item into your library. Or you can choose File, Add To Library. The submenu that appears lets you specify a file, a playlist, URL, or whatever file or playlist is currently playing.

Information in the Details pane of Media Library is organized in rows and columns. Much of the information you see in this list is editable the Track Number, Title, Artist, Album, and Genre, for instance. In fact, you can edit any value that appears in this default list except the data in the Length and File Name columns. Right-click the row where you want to change data and choose Edit from the shortcut menu. While you re editing, you can move from column to column by pressing Tab or Shift+Tab, and move from row to row by pressing Up Arrow or Down Arrow. If you re going to make the same editing change to an entire column, select all of the rows first (click the first entry and then Shift+click the last entry, or press Ctrl+A to select all items in the currently visible list). Then right-click and choose Edit. Move to the column you want to edit by pressing Tab or Shift+Tab, make the edit in one row, and then press Enter to duplicate the edit to the entire column. All editable data in the Details pane of Media Library is metadata that is stored as tags within your media files. When you edit a track name or change the details of an artist in the Library, Windows Media Player rewrites the information in the underlying file. (To change file names, you need to work in Windows Explorer.) For music files, Windows Media Player can read and write these details by way of tags stored directly in the file, using one of the following three formats:

Account policies can be applied only to the root domain of the domain tree. They cannot be applied to sites or OUs.

This relatively old format is still in wide use for MP3 files. It consists of six fields, each of fixed size, stored in 128 bytes at the end of the file. Windows Media Player can read ID3v1 tags but does not write them.

User rights are assigned to user and group accounts and applied through a GPO to sites, domains, or OUs. Permissions attached to objects are assigned to user and group accounts. Additionally, because user rights are part of a GPO, user rights can be overridden depending on the GPO affecting the computer or user.

Modern media players that use the MP3 format typically store metadata using these tags, which can contain dozens of fields, each holding an unlimited number of characters. Because these tags are often used to help identify streaming media, they are stored at the beginning of the media file. If you edit the details associated with an MP3 file in Windows Media Player, it writes the data to the file using this type of tag. These tags are the native format used for Windows Media Audio files. The metadata is stored at the beginning of the file, and the format is functionally equivalent to ID3v2 tags.
