3. Right-click a blank area of the details pane, and then click New Log Settings. 4. In the New Log Settings dialog box, in the Name box, type the name of the log, and then click OK. 5. In the General tab of the dialog box for the trace log, shown in Figure 14-10, the path and filename of the log file are shown in the Current Log File Name box. By default, the log file is created in the PerfLogs folder in the root directory, a sequence number is appended to the filename you entered, and the sequential trace file type is indicated with the .etl extension.

Events Logged By System Provider, for the default provider (the Windows kernel trace provider) to monitor processes, threads, and other activity. To define events for logging, select the check boxes as appropriate. This can cre ate some performance overhead for the system. Nonsystem Providers, to select the trace data providers you want for exam ple, if you have written your own providers. Use the Add or Remove buttons to select or remove nonsystem providers. For a list of the installed providers and their status (enabled or not), click Provider Status.

Thumbnails or file names don t appear. In Thumbnails or Filmstrip view, you might encounter some images that simply won t display as a proper thumbnail. A variety of technical problems can cause broken thumbnails, which typically appear as a large red X or a generic image icon. Try one of the following techniques to restore the thumbnail: Press F5 to refresh the folder s contents. Right-click the image icon and choose Refresh Thumbnail from the shortcut menu. Rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise and then rotate it back to its original position. This technique allows Windows to reread the image. Open the image file in Paint and save it under another name, using the same format. If none of these techniques is successful, the file might be in a format that Windows Explorer s thumbnail handler doesn t recognize, even though it can preview the image when selected. If that s the case, try opening the image in Paint and saving it under a new name, using a different file format. Normally, the name of each image file appears beneath each thumbnail in Thumbnails or Filmstrip view. If these labels disappear unexpectedly, you can make them reappear by switching to any other view (such as List or Details) and then holding down Shift as you choose the Thumbnails or Filmstrip option on the View menu or from the Views button. If you like the cleaner, no-name look, repeat these steps to toggle the display of file names off.

If there are no more lines to deal with, the process halts. If the line starts with #, it s a comment so the line is skipped. Execution resumes at step 1. If the line is not a comment, the process continues.

Note You can have only one trace log that uses the system provider running at a time. In addition, you cannot concurrently run multiple trace logs from the same nonsystem provider. If the system trace provider is enabled, nonsystem providers cannot be enabled, and vice versa. However, you can enable multiple nonsystem providers simultaneously.
