When you create a new subfolder in the My Pictures folder, it automatically inherits all of Windows Explorer s image-handling tools. But you can customize other folders to have these tools as well. Say, for instance, that you keep a collection of logos and product pictures in a subfolder on your drive D. Here s how to customize that folder so that it includes Filmstrip view and the Picture Tasks box:

1 Right-click the folder icon and choose Properties. 2 On the Customize tab, choose Pictures from the Use This Folder Type As A Template list. 3 If you want to organize image files in subfolders, select Also Apply This Template To All Subfolders. 4 To define a custom image that will appear on the folder in Thumbnails and Filmstrip views, click the Choose Picture button and select an image file. If you skip this step, Windows Explorer will display the last four images modified. Note that the image you define here will become part of the template for this folder and will appear on every subfolder you create as well.

Circular Trace File. Defines a circular trace log file (with an .etl extension). Use this file format to record data continuously to the same log file, overwrit ing previous records with new data. Sequential Trace File. Defines a sequential trace log file (with an .etl exten sion) that collects data until it reaches a user-defined limit and then closes and starts a new file.

Make your own icons Creating custom icons isn t particularly difficult. There are dozens of free and shareware icon editors available, or you can create your own. The rules for an icon are simple: Make it 32 pixels square and save it in BMP format, using the extension .ico.

Note Trace logging of file details and page faults can generate an extremely large amount of data. It is recommended that you limit trace logging using the file details and page fault options to a maximum of two hours.

The line is split into parts. An object is created by the Select operator. Work is performed on the book object as specified in the body of the foreach statement. The process continues at step 1.

When you re finished, the dialog box displays the custom image you selected, as in the example shown in Figure 21-12.

An alert detects when a predefined counter value rises above or falls below the configured threshold and notifies a user by means of the Messenger service. Alerts enable you to define a counter value that triggers actions such as sending a network message, running a program, making an entry in the application log, or starting a log. You can start or stop an alert scan either manually, on demand, or automatically based on a user-defined schedule.

To create an alert, you first define the counters you want to monitor for the alert and then set alert triggering and scheduling parameters. To create an alert, complete the following steps: 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Performance. 2. Double-click Performance Logs And Alerts, and then click Alerts. Existing alerts are listed in the details pane. A green icon indicates that the alerts are running; a red icon indicates alerts are stopped.

When customizing a folder, you can also choose Photo Album from the Use This Folder Type As A Template list. What s the difference In a Photo Album folder, Filmstrip is the default view; a Pictures folder defaults to Thumbnails view. Otherwise, the two customizations are identical.
