The purpose of an RF communications system is to transmit voice, video, or data signals wirelessly from one location to another. To achieve this, the transmitted RF signal must be modulated by the analog or digital data streams that represent the information. The original cellular telephone systems used analog FM, because digital modulation IC chips were not available. Currently, all wireless communications systems use digital modulation because of the improved performance it offers. Figure 4.1 shows types of digital modulations on an RF wave. The RF wave is called the carrier, because it is carrying digital information by its modulation. The upper curve shows a bipolar digital data stream that is to be transmitted. In a wired communications system, this digital signal is simply transmitted as a voltage through wire, coaxial cable, or optical ber. The data bitstream in this example is 110100. The second curve in Figure 4.1 shows amplitude modulation of a wireless carrier. There are various types of amplitude modulation. The simplest type shown here is OOK. When the RF signal is on, the data is a 1; when the RF signal is off, the data is a 0. OOK is used in synchronous optical network (SONET) ber optic networks. A timing reference is provided on each network node by an atomic clock. In contrast, all wireless communications systems are asynchronous. It is not feasible in a wireless network to provide an atomic clock at each wireless receiver. In wireless communication, the timing reference is obtained from the digital bitstream

The parameters fjSk , fjTk and j k vary smoothly with the X-ray energy of the characteristic peak. Campbell et al. (1985, 1987) conducted many experiments employing monoenergetic X-ray beams that were obtained from a curved crystal monochromator. Deriving the values of the different parameters and relating them to the X-ray energy showed, evidently, no difference between K and K lines. As already shown by Wielopolski and Gardner (1979), this is not the case when real K X-rays are examined. It is found that the parameters are not unique but take on different values for the K and K series. This is due to the appearance of radiative phenomena (e.g. radiative Auger effects) in the vicinity of the K and K signals. Fitting real X-ray spectra with modi ed Gaussians dramatically increases the number of parameters that need to be optimized for each peak. Besides the area, A, also the tail parameters, fjSk , fjTk and j k are now involved. In our example of 10 elements with two peaks each, the number of parameters has again increased to 84! In practice less parameters are needed since not all the peaks in the spectrum have such intensities that peak shape correction through modi ed Gaussians are required. To decrease the number of parameters, the energy dependence of the shelf and tail parameters can be used. In this way, functions describing the energy dependence can again reduce the total number of parameters, similar to the energy and resolution calibration.
